Top conductor calls for more school music funding
Sir Antonio Pappano, chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, has called for more funding for music in schools. He said the country would lose its world-class reputation for classical music without more funding to encourage children to get involved. Sir Antonion was the conductor for the coronation and he pointed out a lot of politicians were there. It must have gone through their minds that the music was of a certain quality. He said ‘If they want to maintain a level of culture that makes us a tourist destination, it starts not at the top but at the bottom. You expose children to culture, you give them an education in music, you give them an instrument. Maybe they don’t stay with it, but they are changed for life.’.
Sir Simon Rattle and Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber are other top musicians who have called for more funding for music education in schools. Lord Lloyd Webber said he wanted funding for ‘music lessons for all children’.
