TIME magazine’s Girl of the Year

Scottish pupil, Rebecca Young, who designed a solar-powered backpack with an electric blanket inside to help homeless people has been names on the first Time magazine Girls of the Year list.

The budding engineer asked to be photographed in her grungy style in line with her dream of finding fame as a drummer in an all-female rock band.

She said “I am so proud of my achievement, but engineering is just of of the things I’m interested in and my real passion is music and the creative arts.”

“I think there’s a really important message for any young person to look at what you’re interested in and follow your dreams” Rebecca added, “If you see a problem you think you can fix, you can do something about it. And whatever you do, you should always follow your own path to what you want to achieve.”

Daniel Wyatt, rector at Kelvinside Academy, added “Rebecca is a shining example of how a caring young person can see a problem in the world and do something about it. She is also a role model for any young person who wants to follow their own path in life.”
