Sir Keir Starmer gave a speech today in which he says “It is immoral that working-class children are being denied the same opportunities to become Hollywood stars or musical icons as private school pupils.” He said “we are holding back masses of potential because of a decline in arts subjects“. The Labour Leader continues “94% of children attended a state-school but only 60% of British actors, directors and musicians nominated for awards went to state schools“.
Citing the Campaign for the Arts he said there has been a 47% fall in arts subjects being taken at GCSE since 2010.
Sir Keir said “Growing up in a working-class household, the opportunities to learn an instrument gave me benefits far beyond music, art, design, sport and drama“.
